They messed us up and created artificial boundaries so they could expand their territories of exploitation. After that, they left us. They watched us fight to the death so that they could take our resources.
Seeing that we still survived, they supplied us with weapons that could wipe an entire community. All we needed was a help to fight diseases and poverty but they said no, we should rather fight ourselves.
Seeing that we still survived, corrupt officials took over our government institutions and continue the colonial order of exploitation with their corrupt practices. They milked us until their hands were soiled with the blood of all those who died. These people died because they could not get better health care, which the leaders had already catered for in the budgets.
The only democracy they gave us was the sense of voting. They made us feel that voting was the solution to all our problems. We gladly bought into their idea. We went to vote. Voting was a national duty of getting rid of our problems. We voted out our problems every four years. The problems persisted, so we also kept voting. We did this until we realized that was not the actual problem. The problem was rather a systemic failure.
The only memory we have is the illusion of freedom. This freedom we celebrate every year. The leaders keep organizing funeral services for our development. We gave this funeral a nice name called “Independence Day”. We attended these services with the yearly messages of a better future while they enjoyed their future now, but we still hope. We have survived, but shall we live?
Long live the Youth of Ghana,
Long live Ghana,
Long live Africa.
